Mutant Stage is a series of choreographed short films produced by the Fondation Galeries Lafayette during the renovation of its building.
For the third film in the series, Benjamin Millepied occupies the Fondation Galeries Lafayette’s restoration site.
Director of Paris Opera Ballet since 2014, Benjamin Millepied responded to this invitation by simultaneously taking on the roles of choreographer, dancer and director. Personifying the building’s ubiquity, in black and white he reveals the state of transition of the spaces being cleaned up at 9 rue du Plâtre. The building site, steeped in an architectural, chromatic and choreographic interim, is gently exhibited to the public.
Whereas the previous films, respectively directed by Wendy Morgan and Elen Usdin, still carried traces of the building’s previous uses, in the third film, the building under Benjamin Millepied’s eyes and steps is revealed as a skeleton of dust and steel. Initially used as a warehouse for BHV, then becoming a dispensary, a girls’ school and more recently a further education prep school, 9 rue du Plâtre finally appears naked. Thus this Mutant Stage brings the architecture back to its simplest posture, with nothing remaining but lines, material and light.
