Camille Morineau, director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Monnaie de Paris, will launch its cultural programming by curating an exhibition based on an idea from Bernard Blistène, the director of the Musée national d'art moderne. The subject is of essential importance to the history of 20th century sculpture : the transition from the purely vertical aspect of the monument to one encompassing horizontality and its immediate relationship with the ground.
From Robert Smithson's huge Spiral Jetty created in Salt Lake City to the Spectacular floorprojected video installation by Pipilotti Rist, visitors are invited to rethink the notion of sculpture. The Red Angel of Marseille, a magnificent installation by James Lee Byars, consisting of a thousand deep red spheres of glass arranged in a symmetrical pattern of curls and counter-curls, covers the black & white marble floor of the Salon Dupré.
