Following its inaugural collective exhibition Ouverture, the Bourse de Commerce will rearrange the current works on display to make room for the extensive monographic exhibition devoted to the work of American artist Charles Ray.
Co-presented by the Bourse de Commerce – Pinault Collection and the Centre Pompidou, this first-ever retrospective of Ray’s work in France is unprece- dented in size, taking place at both institutions, who conceived the show in close collaboration with the artist starting in 2018, and who are co-publishing its joint catalogue.
The inaugural exhibition of the Bourse de Commerce, Ouverture, highlighted diversity and polyphony. Its first major, post-inaugural exhibition expresses the collector’s intent to make a bold statement, to express his commitment to an artist by inviting him to present his work. This decision testifies to the depth of the more than 20-year relationship between François Pinault and Charles Ray, and to this artist’s prom- inence within the collection; seven of Ray’s works have been shown in eleven exhibitions since 2006, some of which very prominently, such as Boy with Frog for the opening of the Punta della Dogana in 2009.
The upcoming exhibition at the Bourse de Commerce extends from the Forecourt to the Rotunda, the Salon, and to the second-floor galleries, filling two thirds of the museum’s total exhibition space. It features 17 sculptures, six of which are new productions, from a corpus of some one hundred pieces that constitute the artist’s sculpted oeuvre.
