Since the 1990's, two Bordeaux collectors, Jean Suire and Patrick Lorient, have devoted a large part of their lives to gathering more than 2000 fans retracing the history of this accessory from the 17th to the 21st century. Today, they continue to unearth rare, curious or unusual pieces in France and in Europe, and to enrich their collection, which has become one of the most important in Europe.
The Musée d'Aquitaine will present more than six hundred pieces from this remarkable collection. If the first function of the fan is to fan oneself, it also allows to signify one's social belonging and to show one's tastes. We discover the fashion accessory that is inspired by different artistic trends and whose representations illustrate, over the centuries, the historical periods. But one can also find a collection of more unusual fans: advertising supports, ball books, doll fans, engagement fans, mourning fans, and even men's fans!
Painted, engraved, printed, embroidered, folded, pleated, feathered, lace, signed by famous painters and sometimes even art objects, their manufacture requires very diverse materials and the know-how of multiple craftsmen.
Full of precious, rare or unusual pieces, this original exhibition offers a social and artistic panorama of three centuries of history.
