SUZANNE VALADON. UN MONDE À SOI

CENTRE POMPIDOU METZ

Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938)  has left the history of art a fascinating body of work, both transgressive and radical. Her rebellious nature, her extraordinary destiny, her life and art sgared with her son Maurice Utrillo and husband André Utter, have never ceased to fuel the interpreation of her work.

Each facet of the epic novel of this artist in contact with different cosmos paints an essential portrait of arising modernity, and sheds light on an era at the edge of two worlds, taking the viewer from the 19th to the 20th century.

Almost fifty years after her last retrospective in France, the Centre Pompidou- Metz pays tribute to Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) through an ambition monograph conceived as a narrative. "Un Monde à soi" unravels the foundations of her mythology to offer a rereading of her work in all its complexity and thus resituate it within an art history that has paid little attention to this daring artist who refused to be assigned to a movement.

Third retrospective by Chiara Parisi at the head of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the exhibition questions the expressive and firmly contemporary character of Suzanne Valadon's work.
