Gathering almost 170 original works from the Renaissance to modern times, this Parisian chapter of the exhibition presented at the Villa Medicis in Rome from March to May 2022 shines light upon one the most negected and least controled aspects of the drawing practice.
By discussing the multiple aspects of doodling, from daubed sketches on the back of paintings to scribbled work, "Gribouillage / Scarabocchio" reveals how experimental, transgressive, regressive or discharging graphic gestures, which seem to obey now law, have punctuated, from time to time, the history of artistic creation.
