- Berlinde de Bruyckere
Monographic exhibition
From 1 April to 5 November 2023
Curated by: in partnership with Galleria Continua
Interested by the history of the site, a former Templar Commandery from the 13th century, the Belgian artist Berlinde de Bruyckere has found there a notable echo with her work and the subjects that have animated her since the beginning of her career. The protection of pilgrims on their journeys to Palestine is a strong image in these times of war, so much so that the artist decided to structure the exhibition around a new production for La Commanderie de Peyrassol, enriching her Archangelo series. A personification of the burden with which all humanity seems to struggle, the Archangel is for Berlinde de Bruyckere a complex figure associated with notions of protection and hope. Alongside this monumental sculpture, works will also be presented that highlight this essential figure in the artist's work and that in turn resonate with the dramatic conditions generated by current wars and conflicts. Thus, a sculpture presented outdoors - creating a physical link between the temporary exhibition and the historical setting of the site -, two sculptures from the 'Sjemkels' series, as well as small formats from the 'It almost seemed a lily' series and new collages will together form an exhibition in which sensitivity, history, suffering and hope work together to operate a delicate withdrawal, like a breath, on the events that are shaking the world today.
- Zhanna Kadyrova
Installation from 1 April 2023
Curator: in partnership with Galleria Continua
On the eve of 2021, the Ukrainian artist Zhanna Kadyrova treads the stones of the Commanderie de Peyrassol in preparation for her residency planned for March 2021. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia brutally interrupts the project. While she remains to defend her country, Zhanna Kadyrova writes a long letter, in which she already cries out the horror of war. This year, the artist unveils the project she had imagined for the islet of Gierette, with its sublime ruin, and the vineyards of Château Peyrassol. The violence of the contrast between the calm and the harmonious perspective of the Provençal nature and the dramatic situation that the artist has been going through for the last two years make this intervention as tragic as it is necessary, as a form of resistance to barbarism and oblivion.
- Nedko Solakov
From 1 April to 5 November 2023
Curated by: in partnership with Galleria Continua
Since the 1990s, Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov has revealed himself as a great storyteller, showing an undeniably poetic desire for short stories, aphorisms, comparative descriptions, wordplay and semantic double meanings. At the Commanderie de Peyrassol, the artist presents his famous doodles, wall drawings full of humour (sometimes ironic, sometimes sarcastic, or sometimes simply playful) that allow us to discover or rediscover the history of the place and of those who shape it. In the interstices of a crack, the break of a stone, a stain on the concrete or even on the outline of an electricity socket, in the art centre or the vineyard buildings, the artist offers a new look at a site like no other.
