This summer, the Centre Pompidou-Metz is hosting an exhibition by artist Katharina Grosse (b. 1961 in Germany, lives and works in Berlin and New Zealand), who has been using the spray technique to create monumental immersive paintings for over 30 years.
Katharina Grosse has been invited to inhabit the Grande Nef, a magisterial space rising to over 20 metres, which offers itself unhindered, devoid of scenography.
On this occasion, the painter wishes to evolve a large-scale installation originally conceived for the Carriageworks art center in Sydney.
8,250 m² of fabric suspended from the ceiling by enormous knots will form a new space inside the gallery, taking the form of an immense drapery whose exuberant colors and energy overflow the space of the Grande Nef to extend outside, onto the forecourt of the Centre Pompidou-Metz.
The installation offers visitors the experience of literally walking through a painting screen.
