In parallel with the monographic exhibition in the historic salons, La Monnaie de Paris wanted to show the echoes of Georges Mathieu's work in the artistic practices and gestures of urban art by inviting graffiti artists from several generations to work in situ, in the galleries of the meridienne, around drawings by the painter that each of them had selected. The practice of the ‘sign-signature’, the speed of execution, the public performances and the very large formats are all characteristics of Mathieu's painting that interested these artists. From the 1980s onwards, at a time when the contemporary art world was turning away from Mathieu's painting, it held a fascination for different generations of American and European artists in the graffiti movement. The exhibition is co-curated by Éric de Chassey (co-curator of the Georges Mathieu exhibition) and artists Lek & Sowat. They have selected six artists who will be confronting their practice with works on paper by Georges Mathieu: JonOne, Lek & Sowat, Nassyo, Camille Gendron and Matt Zerfa. An opening section will feature a selection of works and films from the history of graffiti art and Mathieu.
