Internationally renowned artist Daniel Buren produces site-specific interventions that appropriate space, whether inside or outside. Here, he has been invited to create an installation for La Pyramide, a former watersports centre. He has done so by reinterpreting the building’s spaces, colours and perspectives.
The exhibition catalogue was written by Bernard Blistène, director of the Centre Pompidou’s cultural development department.
In autumn, the artist will unveil a permanent installation in public space.
Daniel Buren was born in 1938 in Boulogne-Billancourt. He lives and works in situ. A key player on the international artistic scene, Buren has received many prizes for his work. As an artist and theorist, he has played a role in artistic debate since 1965, when he first produced site-specific works using a “visual tool” consisting of alternate 8.7cm bands and other materials. His most recent installation at the Grand Palais (Paris) was composed of 377 translucent coloured circles mounted between 2.5 and 2.9 metres above the ground. Entitled Excentrique(s), this site-specific work was part of Monumenta (May – June 2012). It sought to highlight the relationship between the artist, architecture and public space.
