This exhibition explores the work Dufy completed in the south of France — from his first stay in Martigues around 1903, to the paintings he did in Marseille just after the First World War.
The Musée Ziem highlights the various directions taken by Dufy over the course of 20 years, giving visitors the opportunity to view previously unseen paintings and drawings by the artist. His first Impressionistic paintings are on display, as are later works showing his explosive use of colour — his vision of southern France.
The exhibition then moves on to his Cubist period in L’Estaque in 1908, heavily influenced by Cézanne. The exhibition ends with the painter’s final stylistic changes, which foreshadow the forms and colours that later became central to his work.
