Temporary exhibition - MuCEM J4 - (1500 m2) From 26 March to 25 August 2014
For some thirty years, rural masquerades and urban parades were revived, reinvented and multiplied, mobilising, often with indifference to the liturgical calendar, hundreds of actors and tens of thousands of visitors. In questioning in a transversal manner the current carnivalesque practices and drawing from the beautiful collections of the MuCEM and the Musée International du Carnaval et du Masque, the exhibition The Topsy-Turvy World will entice visitors into the carnivalesque imagination, rich and ancient, which calls upon the major Indo-European mythologies, yet speaks strongly to the people of today. Following an immersive and poetic itinerary, visitors will discover the multiples facets of the carnival and how it highlights their fears, their desires and their dreams.
