There is no translation without differences between languages, without misunderstandings. This incomprehension is called “Babel”. Babel, a curse or fortune? The aim is not to respond directly to this question, but to explore the alternative of being guided by the force of translation. The diversity of languages is often seen as the last frontier: an obstacle to the emergence of a united society and a common political space. The exhibition inverses this proposition and demonstrates how translation is a expertise in differences, an excellent model for citizenship today. “The language of Europe, is translation”, said Umberto Eco. Europe and the Mediterranean are built upon this paradoxical practice: to say “almost” the same thing, and to invent in passing, at the confluence of knowledge and languages. Starting from an abstraction: the passage from one language to another, the exhibition invites us to see, to think and to voyage in this in-between. The exhibition presents works and objects, manuscripts, documents, installations and performances, which manifest in a spectacular manner the games and the challenges of translation.
