DE LA NATURE

MUSEE DE GRENOBLE

From Fall 2022, and for five months, the museum invites four internationally renowned plasticiens for whom the question of the human relationship to nature is essential : Philippe Cognée, Cristina Iglesias, Wolfgang Laib and Giuseppe Penone.

The relationship between man and nature already appears to be one of the major issues of the 21st century. The ecological awareness on a planetary scale that has marked the last two decades is overturning a number of systems of thought in fields as diverse as the economic, social, political or cultural... This question of the link between the human being and its environment is however not new. It is even located at the foundation of the origins of humanity and arises, in fact, from the moment when homo sapiens begins to conceptualize what surrounds him, in particular with drawings and cave paintings.

In order to address this decisive theme of artistic creation, the four invited artists, who have already been presented in Grenoble during monographic exhibitions, come from very different horizons and will allow, thanks to their original plastic proposals, to shed light on this relationship under resolutely original and singular aspects. In the work of Philippe Cognée, the only painter in the selection, the landscape appears as a counterpoint to the urban views that have made him famous, as the expression of an ordered chaos, at once an original and vital place and a wild and threatening one. For Cristina Iglesias, nature manifests itself in the form of "decorative motifs" that subvert the architectural forms she builds, once again posing with irony and sensuality the question of the relationship between nature and culture. With Wolfgang Laib, the relationship to nature is part of a spiritual approach where the work of art becomes an offering to life and to Creation. Finally, Giuseppe Penone, in a fusional relationship with the elements, reveals the energies that run through the human being and unite him in a consubstantial way with his original environment, nature.
