Urban project : The île de Nantes
Mission entrusted to the SAMOA (West Atlantic Housing Society) by Nantes City
The île de Nantes is a mixed site of 337 hectares, located opposite the historic center of a town of 570,000 inhabitants. It is made up of three clearly identifiable districts : the industrial port area to the west, the central suburban area and the area urbanised in the seventies and nineties.
With its capacity, a million square meters of land to be built on, and its diverse functionality, the urban renewal project of the île de Nantes constitutes the major stake in the central area of the City of Nantes Saint-Nazaire.
To build a contemporary city throughout the île, while respecting what makes-up the originality of its landscape, its docklands and industrial tradition, to contribute to economic development, to create an alternative to the urban sprawl, to renew the relationship of a city with its river, to rethink public space…. these are the principal goals of this project.
